Want to study about Bible and Mission or Scripture Engagement in more depth? You can do so as part of Redcliffe’s MA in Contemporary Missiology, which is designed to help you become better equipped to participate in God’s mission in your particular role and context. You will:
- grow in your understanding of key approaches and issues in mission
- develop the ability to reflect on your context and practice in the light of wider mission issues
The MA is ideal if you:
- Are preparing to work in a cross-cultural mission situation
- Are wanting a form of professional reflection and development for your role in mission
- Want to engage in further mission related study or research
- Are taking time to explore your future options
- Need to be flexible in your approach to study, or combine work with study.

What is in each module?
CM1 Research Methods and Approaches to Missiological Study
The research methods element of this module entails an induction into learning skills and critical engagement with a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies appropriate for postgraduate study. The approaches element covers different approaches to the missiological concept of missio Dei and engagement with holistic mission.
CM2 Global Missiological Issues in Intercultural Contexts
This module provides you with the opportunity to critically survey and assess several key contemporary missiological issues (such as environmental sustainability, migration, economic and social inequality, the use of the Bible in mission) within the overarching concept of the missio Dei.
It will include critical theological and sociological engagement with key contemporary ideologies and concepts such as globalisation, contextualisation, secularisation and integral mission. It will also include critical examination of key missiological documents.
CM3 Dissertation
The dissertation of 18,000 words represents the culmination of the MA student’s learning experience. It requires you to frame and negotiate a research question, to select and use appropriate methodologies and primary and secondary sources, to relate these to current academic debate, to arrive at an appropriate and clear overall structure and argument and to present your findings in writing in an academically responsible fashion.
CM8 Reading the Bible Missionally
The module provides an in-depth introduction to the nature and application of a ‘missional hermeneutic’ to biblical texts. You will receive an orientation to the development of the methodology of missional hermeneutics and then apply it to a reading of the Bible. A number of key biblical themes are explored in relation to a missional reading of the Bible, such as monotheism, election, redemption, covenant, ethics, creation, and ‘the nations’.
CM9 Scripture Engagement: Approaches and Issues
The Bible is sometimes described as a ‘tool’ of mission. This module will enable you to explore and evaluate a number of approaches for and issues in Scripture Engagement in different cultural contexts, both in the ‘West’ and in the majority world.
CM10 Scripture Engagement: Professional Project
The module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an approved project of independent study relating to a specific area of Scripture Engagement professional practice.
